How to Choose The Right Mattress

Chiropractic Hurst TX back pain

One of the main reasons why people lose mobility in their 40s and 50s is because of back pain. Back pain in Hurst TX can prevent you from staying active and doing the things you love. This also means it can be more difficult for you to maintain a healthy weight and keep your energy and strength up. To stay on the path of a healthy and active life, treating and managing back pain is essential.

Most people get 6-8 hours of sleep every night. This means you spend about 1/3 of your life lying in bed! That is why choosing the right mattress is important to preventing and managing back pain. Your mattress needs to properly support your spine so you can get a good night's rest and function better the next day.

Previously many doctors have recommended firm mattresses. These mattresses are often marketed as orthopedic beds. One recent survey found that back pain sufferers got the poorest sleep quality when they slept on an orthopedic mattress.

On the other hand, a mattress that is too soft can also cause problems. Soft mattresses do a good job of conforming to the natural curves of your body which can help maintain your joints proper alignment throughout the night. If the mattress is too soft, your body will sink deeply into the bed causing your joints to twist and become painful during the night.

If your mattress is 7-8 years old and you wake up with a stiff and sore back a new bed may help. If your mattress isn't that old and your back still bothers you, you may be sleeping on the wrong type of bed.

There are a couple of things you can do to either soften or make your mattress firmer. To make your mattress firmer I recommend putting a plywood board under the mattress. This will dampen the movement from the bed springs. You can also try placing the mattress directly on the floor.

To soften the mattress you can purchase a 1-3" memory foam topper and place it on top of your mattress. The thickness of the topper will depend on how much you weigh and how much softer you want your mattress to be. This will allow your body to conform to the memory foam, while the mattress is still in place to provide the remaining support your spine needs.

Patients often ask me what they should do when they require a firm mattress but their other half prefers a softer mattress. There are expensive options out there like a Sleep Number bed, but you can achieve the same result with spending less. When you put two twin extra-long mattresses together they equal a king-size bed. This will allow you to select two different mattresses so you both get can the sleep you need and wake up feeling great.

Lastly, please keep this in mind when you're at the mattress showroom testing the different models. What feels comfortable for a few minutes in a store does not mean it will have the same comfort level after laying on it for 6-8 hours. Do your homework ahead of time and use the tips above to find out what type of mattress you should be sleeping on.
