Chiropractor in Hurst TX Explains
The Real Source of Your Neck Pain

Chiropractic Hurst TX morning neck

Neck pain in Hurst TX is the second most common condition that we see in our office (back pain is #1). We previously talked about what can cause your neck to hurt and we know it can be multifactorial. Let's take a closer look at the four most common sources of neck pain.

Mechanical Pain in Hurst TX

  • Mechanical pain means that the source of the pain is coming from the spinal joints and supporting structures. This type of pain is most commonly caused by repetitive stress and strain on the muscles and ligaments that support your spine. Activities that increase stress on your spine include poor posture, poorly-designed seating, and incorrect bending and lifting motions. Over time these activities will cause one or more of the joints in the spine to lose their normal joint motion.
  • Common complaints are pain and stiffness in the neck or lower back and muscle pain and/or spasms. The pain may travel from the neck to the back of your skull, to your upper back and shoulder, and even down into your arms and hands. You may not be able to turn your head as far and easily as before. You may also notice that you are stiff and sore when getting up in the morning or after sitting for prolonged periods.

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) & Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)

  • If your spinal injuries are left untreated, the same repetitive stressors that cause mechanical pain can result in degeneration of the discs and joints of the spine. As your discs and joints start to 'wear out the following changes occur which result in stiffness and sometimes pain.
  • Loss of fluid in your discs. This makes the discs less flexible and reduces their ability to act as shock absorbers. As fluid is squished out it also makes the disk thinner which brings the vertebrae closer together.
  • Tears or cracks in the outer layer of the disc. As your spinal disc thins, the jellylike material inside is forced out through these tears and cracks. This causes the disc to start bulging. In severe cases, the disc material can push through the outer layer and break into fragments.
  • Bone spurs. As the space between your vertebrae get smaller, your spine becomes less stable. The body responds by making new bony growths to stabilize the area.

Pinched Nerves

  • If you have pain and/or numbness traveling into your arms and hands, it's most likely from a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves are most often caused by the changes that occur to your discs and spinal joints. Depending on their location, bulging or herniated discs and bone spurs can put pressure on your delicate nerves sending pain and numbness into your arm and hands.

Spinal Stenosis

  • Spinal stenosis refers to a narrowing of the canal where your spinal cord is and where the nerves exit your spine. Narrowing of these passageways leads to pain, numbness, and/or weakness in one or both arms.
  • These conditions respond well to gentle chiropractic techniques like Advanced Chiropractic Methods. There are other sources of neck pain, so it is important to have a thorough examination to find out where your pain is coming from. Then, we can start mapping out your plan to become pain-free.
