Natural Treatments for Neck Pain

Chiropractic Hurst TX neck pain blog

If you are suffering from neck pain in Hurst TX, there are many treatment options to choose from. Your family doctor will usually follow standard medical care guidelines and prescribe a muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory and/or pain killer. While this may be necessary fortemporary relief of severe symptoms, using them long term is no way to live. Many patients that we see in the office have already tried medications or are reluctant to take that route due to potential side effects. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil), Aleve (Naproxin), or aspirin often upset the stomach. Pain killers and muscle relaxers often make patients feel groggy and sleepy. To avoid these unwanted, disruptive side effects, patients often seek out complementary/alternative care for relief.

In 2008, a research team reviewed over 552 studies published between 1980 and 2006 to create a report of evidenced-based treatment options for neck pain. Their findings included the following:

  • 54% of neck pain sufferers in the United States used complementary/alternative care.
  • Neck pain was the second most common reason Americans used chiropractic care.
  • For neck or upper back pain, chiropractic was the most frequently reported form of treatment. It ranked higher than massage therapy, relaxation therapy and acupuncture.
  • Patients with neck pain who received complementary AND standard medical care reported that the complementary care was more helpful (61% vs. 6.4%).
  • Over a 4-6 year time span, women were more likely to seek care for neck and shoulder pain (29% vs. 18%).
  • Patients with acute whiplash, reported greater short-term pain reduction with manual therapy (mobilization, manipulation and stretching) when compared to standard medical care, general advice, soft collars or passive therapies.
  • Manipulation or mobilization, exercise, low level laser therapy and "…perhaps acupuncture…" were reported as more effective by non-whiplash neck pain patients when compared to no treatment, sham, or other alternative treatments.
  • Supervised exercise with or without manual therapy was preferred over no care or standard medical care by both whiplash and non-traumatic neck pain patients.

What these studies mean is that you can soon be enjoying life…without those aggravating neck and arm problems. Each of our patients receive a individualized care plan that includes manipulation, mobilization, activity modifying advice and a home exercise program. This approach has been found to be more effective than standard medical care! Don't waste time with a "wait and see" approach when the evidence favors chiropractic care.
